Australia not only gets beautiful summer weather in December but also a National Portrait Gallery. Why can't Canada be more like our mates "Down Under"?

We do kind of have a Portrait Gallery of Canada, but it is more a division of LAC than anything. Not nearly as impressive as Australia's.

Canada was suppose to get a fancy new National Portrait Gallery like Australia, but the Harper government canceled it.
I was just telling my dad about that while we walked through the American Portrait Gallery, situated in a huge, lovely neoclassical building (like all of DC). Strange how little money/attention it's given in Canada! Also re: HP - I was wondering if someone would mention that :)
